The Technique of Orchestration
Kennan composed his last major work in at the age orchestrationn 43 and largely abandoned composition, writing only occasional small pieces and devoting himself to teaching and educational writing. It is orcnestration only a helpful reference, but with each edition, it details not kwnnan the capabilities of every instrument, but the explorations into the special effects that can be created by instruments.
These extremely helpful chapters are also preceded by short introductions to specifics… scoring chords for woodwinds, horns and strings, for example. Kennan was a longtime professor at the University of Texas at Austin, also teaching briefly at Kent State University and for two years at Ohio State University during the s.

Kent Kennan was an American composer, author, educator, and professor. The last 20 pages or so of the book are devoted to nicely-condensed appendices on instruments’ names in English, Italian, French and German; the ranges of instruments, voices and electronic instruments.
